When we think of shark movies, we think back to that one movie that started Steven Spielberg's career in Hollywood film making. Of course, I am talking about Jaws. Just hearing the name it will instantly you humming the theme song. Jaws is not the only shark movie out there, but many shark films have tried to get up there with Jaws. Now, a new contender appears and bigger than ever in the upcoming movie, The Meg. If you have not heard what The Meg is I am not surprised at all because there is so very little news about this movie. Here is what is known so far.
Based on a 1997 novel, Meg: A Novel Of Deep Terror, the summary from IMDB states, "After escaping an attack by what he claims was by a 70-foot shark, Jonas Taylor must confront his fears to save those trapped in a sunken submersible." It stars Jason Statham playing the role as Jonas Taylor. The Meg was first set up by Disney in 1997, but it was not picked up until June of 2015 when Warner Bros picked up the filming rights for Meg. It was not until 2016 that Warner Bros. found a director for the movie through Jon Turteltaub. Turteltaub is known for movies like Phenomenon, Instinct, The Kid, National Treasure and National Treasure: Book Of Secrets, and The Sorcerer's Apprentice.
The movie is already finished and is set to be released August 10, 2018. The question is where is the trailer for this movie? According to a Facebook post from Steve Alten, the author of the novel the movie is based on, he has this to say.
"By now, I expected the MEG movie trailers to be out and going viral with millions of views. I've actually seen the two trailers and they are excellent. The powers-that-be decided it would be best to delay their launch from March to late April. The reason has to do with analytics and if the viewing audiences sees a trailer too early and then the movie comes out much later, they are left with a false impression that the movie has already been out. (Personally, I never expected to see a trailer until June, but with huge movies like MEG the studios like to get the juices early).
What is important is that the trailers are finished and they WILL come out in April... Also debuting in April will be the movie poster. I've seen the mock-up and I really like it. It features an angle of the MEG that has never appeared on one of my MEG covers."
So basically what he is saying is that it is all about timing and that it is coming later this month along with the movie poster. Even the author thinks that releasing the trailer in April is still too early, but he knows that people are getting anxious and now is the time to let the world get a sneak peak at this ancient terror of the deep.
So as you can see there is not much info for The Meg and I don't think they are trying to keep it hush-hush. There is just not a whole lot to say about the film other than it is a shark film and that we just need to be patient for the trailer. This movie has sort of peaked my interest, but we will see when we get an actual trailer to go on. It can be good or it can be a fish out of water and flop. For now, we just need to wait a little longer.
