Announced by Japanese website, Mantan Web, Japanese production studio, Toei Company, will be collaborating with the film studio, Shochiku Company, to produce a kaiju film titled In The Wake Of Giant Monsters. The movie is set to star Ryosuke Yamada and Tao Tsuchiya with Satoshi Miki set to direct the film.
In The Wake Of Giant Monsters is reported to be a comedy film that takes place in the aftermath of Japan's battles with giant monsters. The country must take on many environmental and political issues while cleaning up the corpses of the monsters before Japan collapses. The movie is expected to release late 2020.
Toei Company is mostly known for their animation studio, Toei Animation, who are known to produce anime such as the Dragon Ball series (Dragon Ball, Dragon Ball Z, Dragon Ball GT, Dragon Ball Super), Devilman, Mazinger Z, Sailor Moon, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Digimon Adventure, and One-Piece.
Shochiku Company does not have a huge list of films in their catalogue, but the studio is recognized for The X From Outer Space, The Guyver (in collaboration with New Line Studios), and The Monster X Strikes Back: Attack The G8 Summit.
While I do like the shows Toei Company has produced, the collaboration with Shochiku Company and the fact that the movie is a comedy does not have me excited at all. Not that I am opposed to comedy movies about giant monsters, it is just that Shochiku's style of comedy kind of sucks and unbearable to watch just based on their previous two comedy monster movies, The X From Outer Space and The Monster X Strikes Back. They're suppose to be parody movies on the genre itself, but there are far better parody movies out there that can be funny and memorable. Mel Brooks is the master of parody films such as SpaceBalls (my all time favorite comedy movie), Son Of Frankenstein, Dracula: Dead And Loving It, and Blazing Saddles.
However, I will admit that The Guyver is one of my guilty pleasure movies. I know that it isn't one for one retelling of the manga and anime series, but I do like the story and the characters. The Guyver isn't a superhero movie like Superman or Batman. It is about a teenager that stumbled upon an alien weapon and the aliens are trying to kill him to get their weapon back so they can conquer the planet. Even though the movie has been heavily criticized for the bad story and over-acting, there is a certain charm to it that makes The Guyver fun to watch. And for the time the movie was released, the practical effects and the suits look really great. What I am trying to say overall is even though there are some bad movies Shochiku has made, maybe the new monster movie will be one of Shochiku's better films. Until I see something from this movie that suggests it will be a good movie, I just don't have high expectations at all for In The Wake Of Giant Monsters.
