In two years, the sixth movie in the Monsterverse series will release in theaters. There is no plot synopsis yet, we did get slight information from Deadline that this movie will see Godzilla and Kong back together for the third time following up from the events of Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire.

We did get our first cast member revealed from Deadline. The Last of Us star Kaitlyn Dever will be joining the film. Her role is currently unknown at this time. Kaitlyn Dever is also known for other films such as Booksmart, Short Term 12, Good Grief, and No One Will See You and TV shows such as Unbelievable, Last Man Standing, and Dopesick. She also has the upcoming Netflix series Apple Cider Vinegar releasing February 6, 2025.
While Godzilla and Kong will be front and center, insiders report to Deadline that Legendary is looking to build more on the human characters and Dever was their first logical choice. Director Grant Sputore, who has taken up the mantle after Godzilla x Kong director Adam Wingard stepped down, is focusing on making a more character-driven story.
This is just me speculating, but I believe this new direction to make the next movie more character-driven is in response to two things: 1. The criticisms of the human characters in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and 2. The critically acclaimed performance of the characters and drama in the story in Godzilla Minus One.
I think Godzilla Minus One pushed the boundaries of how a Godzilla movie should be. Expectations are going to be high when the sixth movie releases. When Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire came out there was a lot of comparisons and contrasts to Godzilla Minus One despite both movies aiming for something different. One movie was aiming to be just a fun monster romp with lots of action while the other aimed to be a drama. Godzilla fans can separate the two movies and understand they are two different movies. However, general audiences are the ones that have the final say and when they see two movies releasing so close together they are going to prefer one over the other.
Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire made more money than Godzilla Minus One, but Godzilla Minus One had the most praises for the story the movie tells. It showed the general audience just how good of a story a Godzilla movie can be. Plus, Godzilla Minus One won an award for Best Visual Effects. For the small budget that movie had it was surprising just how good that movie looked. It had a lot of people questioning Hollywood why their movies are looking so mediocre with $500 million budgets. So I do think the criticisms from those movies have played a role on the direction with where Legendary wants to take the next movie.

I do think Kaitlyn Dever is a pretty good actress, but I only know her in Last Man Standing when she played Eve Baxter, the youngest daughter of Mike Baxter (played by Tim Allen). I have not seen her in the other films and shows she has been in. However, from those that has seen her other shows and movies they even say she is a good actress. So I am quite curious to know more about what her role is in the new Godzilla/Kong film.
