Back in San Diego Comic Con, TOHO head of production management, Akito Takahashi, had an interview with SyFy Wire and Inverse. He talked about the importance of TOHO's appearance at SDCC that it was part of TOHO's plan to promote Godzilla and the studio internationally and gave his thoughts on the Monsterverse. Recently, a new interview article with Akito Takahashi has popped up from hiddenremote.com. In this article, he was asked if there are more Godzilla anime movies being planned.
"Not specific to that series of movies, but as far as the animation format goes, absolutely. We believe there'll be some exciting content around that as well. We're not quite sure if the next installment will be a sequel to the trilogy currently streaming on Netflix, there'll probably be a different type of story within the animation format."
From what Mr. Takahashi is saying there is interest in doing more animated Godzilla films. However, before he was asked about the possibility of more anime Godzilla movies he was asked if there are any Japanese Godzilla movies in development.
"There's always conversations that keep happening, like the "Making of the movies," those conversations never really stop, so it's a continual conversation, but at this point, we don't have anything else to add."
TOHO is always talking about ideas, but in terms of making more Godzilla movies there are no plans at the moment. Here is what I take from this article. I think they are exploring all possible ideas including more animated Godzilla movies, but nothing is set in stone. To be honest, I don't think that TOHO doing their own Godzilla cinematic universe is really set in stone either. I think what they are doing at the moment is waiting until Godzilla vs Kong has released and find out where to go from there. TOHO seems more focused on branching out their brands to an international market at the moment.
Overall, I don't think this is confirmation that more animated Godzilla movies are on the way, but a possibility that it could happen. Like Akito said in his interview with SyFy Wire and Inverse it all depends on where the movie's creators would like to take the series. For all we know, TOHO might not explore doing animated Godzilla movie for a very long time. Perhaps we might see one in the near future. Only time will tell if there will be more or not.
What do you guys think? Is this confirmation that more animated Godzilla movies are on the way or do you think that it isn't happening any time soon?
