March 2027 Sees Packed Competition Of Franchises; "Godzilla X Kong 3" Expected To Move?

Sonic, Zelda, and Monsterverse…OH MY! March 2027 is going to have quite the competition! On Thursday, March 27th, Nintendo had their Nintendo Direct presentation that was deemed the last presentation for the Nintendo Switch before the official reveal of the Switch 2. At the end of the presentation, there was a new app Nintendo releases called "Nintendo Today," which brings news each day on all things Nintendo. It was the next day on the app, Nintendo dropped the news on the official release date for The Legend of Zelda live-action movie. The release date for the movie is March 26, 2027, the same exact day as "Godzilla x Kong 3."
Ever since Godzilla vs Kong released on March 31, 2021, Easter has shown to prove to be very favorable for the Monsterverse franchise. Godzilla vs Kong helped kickstart the recovery for movie theaters after a whole year being locked down by COVID-19 making $470 million worldwide. This was despite Warner Bros. having the same date release for both theaters and their streaming service, HBO Max. Then Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire was released March 29, 2024 and went on to make $571 million worldwide, which is the highest grossing film in the Monsterverse franchise beating Kong: Skull Island by $3.197 million.

Nintendo, on the other hand, has been exploring outside the realm of video games and are expanding their franchises to other areas. The Super Nintendo World has opened in two Universal Studios theme park locations, Japan and Hollywood, with one more opening in the Orlando location May 22, 2025. To coincide with the opening of the Super Nintendo World theme parks, Nintendo partnered with Illumination Entertainment to make The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which released April 5th, 2025. The movie went on to make $1.360 billion worldwide, which is phenomenal for a movie based on a video game.
On top of that, we have Sonic The Hedgehog 4 releasing the week before. Last year's Sonic The Hedgehog 3 culminated a total of $491 million in the global box office. This was thanks to Keanu Reeves voicing the character Shadow. A popular actor playing a popular character makes a world of difference as the first two Sonic movies made a total of $319 million and $405 million.
Next comes the million dollar question that Monsterverse fans are asking: Will "Godzilla x Kong 3" change release dates? Seeing that The Legend of Zelda does not even have cast members yet the sixth Monsterverse movie is safe where it is for now. Nintendo does have until the end of this year to start production if they want to make the release date. If not, then I can see Nintendo possibly pushing The Legend of Zelda movie back a month. Sonic 4 is safe for now, as well. Opening on the weekend before Easter will help get that boost the movie needs for a decent opening weekend.
All of us want to see our favorite franchises succeed. This is why instead of one fandom fighting another group over which movies are going to do well more people are pushing for that "Barbenheimer" (Barbie and Oppenheimer mashed together) effect for hype. For a while, it was Sonic and "Godzilla x Kong 3" being mashed together as "Sonzilla." Then, the announcement for the Zelda movie popped up and everyone is now going with "GodZelda The Hedgehog 4." So fans are at least having fun with this.
On an unrelated note, there is a rumor about the official working title for "Godzilla x Kong 3" going around and apparently the working title is "Zeus." However, there is no credible source to whether or not this is the real working title the movie will be produced under. The only source I seem to find is the movie's IMDB page, which it says fake working title in parenthesis. If it is true, then we are going to have a lot to speculate on what this might mean for the next movie.
I want to know what you think of The Legend of Zelda movie's release date being announced? Do you think it will make the release date or could there be a chance it will get pushed back? Do you think Sonic 4 and "Godzilla x Kong 3" are in trouble or are they good for right now? Leave a comment in the comments section of your thoughts on March 2027 being a packed month.
