Over the weekend, NECA revealed their next Godzilla figures at Toy Fair NY. We saw that most of the monsters (Godzilla, Mothra, and Rodan) were there on display. It was exciting to see NECA is branching out to do other monsters other than Godzilla, but there was one monster in particular that didn't make the cut on NECA's casting call of figures.
People took to Twitter asking NECA if they plan to show a King Ghidorah figure later in the show. The answer they received was that they did not have plans to show King Ghidorah at the show. So people assumed that maybe they are saving him for later down the line. Even I thought in my last post that they were holding it back until after the movie was released or even a year from now to release King Ghidorah. That is until someone asked if they are doing King Ghidorah at all. The response is a flat out no. Their reason I heard in an interview with YouTuber, Luminous, was if they made a King Ghidorah figure at the same scale as the rest of the Godzilla figures then the price would be $160 instead of the standard $25. At first, I started thinking about how stupid the excuse sounded. After giving some more thought on everything the NECA representative in the interview said and the tweets, I think that there is still a possibility for one to be made just not right now.
Yes, in the tweet they straight up said that they are not doing the figure. However, if you listen to the representative closely, she did say RIGHT NOW, there are no plans in making a King Ghidorah figure. Meaning that there are no plans at the moment, but perhaps in the future. On Twitter, NECA tends to be vague with their answers. There were times where NECA would say that they weren't going to do a specific figure and reveal way later that they are doing one. Remember when they said that Rodan was not going to be at Toy Fair? Rodan did show up at Toy Fair. So you can't fully believe what NECA says on Twitter all the time.
I know that you're thinking that the monster is popular enough to sell and you would buy their action figure at any price, but there could be other factors involved than just the monster's popularity. The movie itself has to do well. If it does well, then the possibility of a King Ghidorah figure increases. If the movie is NOT doing well, then the chances decreases. There is no way for certain right now if Godzilla: King Of The Monsters will make a profit or bomb. A movie's guaranteed success means a guaranteed success with the merchandise. If the merchandise sells then there will be more merchandise. If the four Godzilla figures that were revealed prove to be a success, then a King Ghidorah figure can most likely happen. I just think NECA is not going to make an expensive action figure until they know for certain that the movie is a success. Imagine making a King Ghidorah figure and finding out that they aren't selling. That's money lost than money earned.
NECA is not making one right now, but if the movie and the current merchandise makes money then the possibility for NECA to make a King Ghidorah action figure rises. Money talks more than voices. So it's not the end all be all if it does not happen right now. I would not be surprised if they release one along side another Godzilla figure that NECA is currently working on, but can't reveal at the moment.
