2022 is a little more than a month away and there are quite a few video games in the kaiju genre releasing next year. We have Dawn of the Monsters, Gigabash, and Kaiju Wars releasing early 2022. Recently, WB Games announced their own platform/brawler game called Multiversus which is like Super Smash Bros. with a multitude of WB licensed characters like Shaggy from Scooby-Doo, Bugs Bunny, Batman, Superman, Harley Quinn, Tom & Jerry, and Arya Stark from Game of Thrones coming together and fighting each other. So fans of the Monsterverse series are eyeing on Multiversus to see if Godzilla and/or Kong will get a spot in the roster. However, there is one game we have not heard any details yet that is being developed by Platinum Games and that’s Project G.G.
For those that don’t know what Project G.G. is, it’s a game that was announced last year by Platinum Games that looks to be inspired by Ultraman and Platinum Games will be self-publishing the game, as well. When you look at their previous titles such as Wonderful 101, Astral Chain, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2, and Bayonetta 3 (releasing late 2022) those were projects tasked to them and published mostly by Nintendo and other studios. So Project G.G. is a game that Platinum Games wanted to claim as their own.
Ever since the game’s first announcement, Platinum Games went radio silent on the project. Then as recent as September, an interesting list of game titles were leaked by a web developer that was tinkering with NVidia's game streaming service called GeForce Now. In this listing, Project G.G. is dated to release on March 1, 2022, which is sooner than expected for a game that was just announced last year.
Usually when it comes to leaks, they’re taken with a grain of salt, in terms of legitimacy. This list is very long to the point where one scroll through would make people think, at first, that it is all one person's wishful thinking. However, what makes this list so interesting are how some of these rumors could be taking shape. For instance, there is a lot of talk about God of War that is rumored to be coming out for the PC. Chrono Cross Remaster is another title people are eyeing on as a music artist reported he was working on music for a remake that Sony will be announcing this holiday. Another game listed is Actraiser Remake, which turned out that another Act Raiser game was announced called Actraiser Renaissance. Gearbox even pitched for a new Brothers in Arms game and that is even on this list. Lastly, the remastered Grand Theft Auto Trilogy is on this list and the trilogy game collection got released just this month. So there seems to be a little bit of legitimacy with this list.
With the Video Game Awards (VGAs) coming up, most gamers look at the VGAs as a mini-E3 digital event more than an award ceremony. Gamers want to know about new video game announcements more than the award ceremony itself since it is just as rigged as the Oscars. There is another possibility that Sony is preparing for another State-of-Play, which some of the games listed could get announced there, as well.
The point is that if any of these video game titles on this list do get announced, then not only would the leaked list be legit, but there is a good chance we may start to hear more details about Project G.G. from Platinum Games fairly soon. I am not going to say that the March 1st release date is legit as it could just be a placeholder date. Or maybe it is the date when the game finally gets a full reveal. Imagine on March 1st, Platinum Games drops the trailer for Project G.G. showing cinematic scenes and gameplay and we get the real release date possibly being around mid-late 2022 or possibly sometime in 2023. That would be quite the surprise.
While the announcement trailer showed no gameplay at all, I can imagine this game being like a beat-em-up with side missions you must complete first before you fight the monster of each level. The level begins colorful, but is clouded with grey and darkness when the kaiju appears and causes havoc. So amid the chaos, the character you play as would have to save people from buildings collapsing or from being stomped by the monster and your score is based on your heroic style and timing and fighting combos. Once you have defeated the monster, the level becomes colorful again and the monster is added to the roster of characters that you can play as or ally with when facing off against stronger monsters. You can even play all of the characters you unlock in online tournaments or even a cooperative campaign mode. But, who knows? That’s just what I imagine and the game can be completely different.
What are your thoughts on the GeForce leak list? Do you think it is legit or just full of hot air? Do you think we will hear more info on Project G.G. from Platinum Games any time soon?
