This past weekend marked the final theatrical weekend for Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire and is now the highest grossing Monsterverse film having made $570 million worldwide. Last time we had an update, the movie took the number two spot for most profitable Monsterverse movie making $567million, which surpassed Godzilla (2014) $524 million in the box office worldwide total. Kong: Skull Island was the original highest grossing Monsterverse film having made $568 million worldwide back in 2017.

Godzilla x Kong tells the next chapter of Godzilla and Kong as they now live separate kingdoms. Godzilla rules the world on the surface and Kong rules the Hollow Earth as he searches more of his own kind. Upon stumbling into unknown territory, Kong discovers a baby ape called Suko. Kong forces Suko to lead him to where the baby Kong lives only to discover that his kind are enslaved by an evil ape called Skar King whose goal is to take his army of Great Apes and an ancient Titan called Shimo to the surface to invade. These new threats forces Kong and Godzilla to team up to save both the surface and the Hollow Earth.

Even though the movie was not my cup of tea, the cartoony-ness of the movie was enough to be a lot of fun for most fans and general audiences.

Currently, there is a sixth Monsterverse film that is in the works by Legendary Entertainment. Even though he had sparked interest in making a third Godzilla/Kong crossover film, director Adam Wingard had to turn down the offer to work on other projects and to take a break from making monster movies. Instead, the sixth Monsterverse film will be helmed by director Grant Sputore, which he has directed Netflix's I Am Mother with writer Dave Callaham penning the script.

This is not Dave Callaham's first time writing a script for a Monsterverse film as he was credited as one of the writers for Godzilla (2014). However, other projects he was credited for such as Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, Wonder Woman 1984, Mortal Kombat, and The Expendables (all four of them) has fans reacting iffy about how the sixth movie will turn out. On the other hand, people are hopeful that Grant Sputore can bring a fresh new take to the Monsterverse based on how he directed I Am Mother.

Despite Adam Wingard not returning to direct the sixth film, there is always a chance he could return in the future if the Monsterverse movies are still going strong. He is still interested in doing another one and he did say he has ideas on where to take the Monsterverse next. One of his ideas would have been a more Godzilla-centric film as Godzilla vs Kong and Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire were centered more around Kong. So perhaps if he does return in the future we could see what kind of idea he has cooking.
