For months, we have been talking about when the trailer will drop, why there has been no trailer, trailer this, and trailer that. Finally, Warner Bros. made an announcement after months of silence. They have announced that Godzilla vs Kong is delayed and pushed back to November 20th, 2020. The movie was originally scheduled to be released March 13th, 2020.
To be honest, I am not even mad about it. This delay was sort of expected to happen. There were rumors about a delay potentially happening and now we have confirmation that it happened. Also, the fact that we had no details about this movie at all was a big indicator of the delay happening. There were no interviews about the movie, no articles, no viral marketing, no toy leaks, no other posters for the movie, none, nada, zilch. All news was dead silent until now.
This was probably not an easy decision as it took this long to announce the movie's delay. It could be that they were debating when the best date to release the film and most of 2020 is pretty much packed. The only competition Godzilla vs Kong will be facing next year are two Disney properties, Raya and the Last Dragon and Marvel's The Eternals. Seeing how Godzilla: King Of The Monsters performed in the box office I am sort of worried that the same thing could happen again with Godzilla vs Kong, but only time will tell.
Another positive about this delay is that it gives the production team more time to work on the special effects, the music soundtrack, and any possible reshoots without feeling rushed and to make sure they deliver the best movie of this series. So far, Kong: Skull Island is still my number 1 favorite movie in the Monsterverse because it had a perfect balance of visuals and story telling. Godzilla: King Of The Monsters had a flawed story, but had one of the greatest visual effects. While Godzilla (2014) is held on a pedestal for being the first movie American Godzilla movie and starting the Monsterverse series, I found it to be the weakest entry out of the other movies in this series with the visual effects being too dark to see what is going on and the story feeling like a drag after Bryan Cranston dies in the movie. As you can see, Warner Bros. and Legendary Studios has been trying to improve with each movie to see what works and what doesn't work. Hopefully by this point, Warner Bros. and Legendary Studios have taken notes from the previous movies this extension will allow the production team to make Godzilla vs Kong the greatest movie in the series.
I am really looking forward in seeing what next year brings us and I hope that Godzilla vs Kong is worth the year long wait. What are your thoughts on the movie's delay?
