With Godzilla: King Of The Monsters being ten months away, we finally got our first official trailer. I gave my reaction on the trailer that I was thrilled to bits and I had tears from the joy I was feeling. After watching the trailer over and over, there are things that you may have missed while watching. So let's dive in and see what lovely treasures we'll find.
The trailer starts off with Vera Farmiga as Emma Russell making a big speech about how humanity is a disease and that the Earth created these monsters called Titans to cure itself and that we have set up our own extinction. She even claims the monsters as the "rightful rulers" of this planet. This sounds to me like that Emma will be a villain of the movie, but it could also because she is just being held hostage by the terrorists she is being forced to read the lines given to her. I am leaning towards her being a neutral villain, a character that starts off as a bad guy only for that same character to be redeemed after they realize their mistake. I will get more into that later. We see Millie Bobby Brown as Madison on top of a building with binoculars until she feels a sudden shift in the wind. She turns around, sees a cloud of debris with lights flashing and she runs back inside for cover. This shot looks like it's somewhere around the climax where Godzilla and King Ghidorah (aka Monster Zero) will be facing off in Boston.
Next thing we see is everybody turning to the monitor to watch the video that Farmiga was making her big speech and Kyle Chandler as Mark looking worried. We know that he is just worried about his daughter, Madison, and Emma as well. We do know that Mark and Emma are split up or divorced, but I will explain later. Let's rewind a bit where we see the people standing up, but behind them looks to be a radar or map. From how it looks, it seems like that more monsters have been released. Mike Dougherty himself confirmed that more monsters will be in the film aside from the main four. So we are probably seeing the beginning of the end for humanity as we know it.
The next scene we come across is Ken Watanabe as Dr. Serizawa with a team of researchers inspecting ruins found at the bottom of the ocean. This is the first bit of history that we learn about Godzilla from the cave paintings that were left in these ruins. We find out from these paintings that humanity and the monsters have lived side - by - side and coexisting with one another with the monsters. It even shows that humans back then worshiped these monsters as gods and made offerings to them. It seems like through these offerings, the monsters protect humanity in return for their kindness. It cuts to our first look at O'Shea Jackson Jr. as Chief Warrant Officer Barnes of the new task force called the G-Team. In an interview, O'Shea Jackson Jr. mentions that he is just a grunt, but goes into more detail that this new task force was created by MONARCH to fight the invading monsters. So the G-Team is this movie's version of the 90's Godzilla movies that had G-Force and in Godzilla vs Megaguirus with the G-Graspers. What's more is that he is facing toward something. Perhaps a mission briefing or he is just listening intently on Emma Russell's propaganda video. It cuts to the next shot where it shows Mark Russell standing at the edge of the glass staring at Godzilla while Godzilla stares back them while his dorsal plates glow. It pans to show how everybody is standing real still waiting to see what will happen not knowing if Godzilla is going to attack or not.
Following up, we get our first look at the big bad monster of the movie, King Ghidorah, and he is MASSIVE! He sort of has that design from Godzilla, Mothra, King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All Out Attack from the silhouette. If you look on the right of the picture, you can see what looks like either a foot or a hand. From how he is positioned, that could possibly be a hand since it looks like King Ghidorah fell on his back. Yet, it could also be part of the wing as well. Then, we see Madison and Emma with an unknown character behind them. This unknown character is actor Charles Dance, who most people would recognize him as the character, Tywin Lanister, from HBO's tv series, Game Of Thrones. We don't know much of Charles Dance's character, but the fact that his character's name is not yet published on IMDB's website, means that this is very secretive. Director Mike Dougherty did confirm that a character from Kong: Skull Island is returning for this movie. So could Charles Dance be playing an older version one of those characters from Kong: Skull Island. That we will have to wait until the movie is released. Then, we cut to a destroyed city that could be San Fransisco. Now, it is here that leads many to believe that this is a flash back to the 2014 movie in a different perspective. The question is where in the movie it takes place. My guess is that this is the beginning of the movie because it has been five years since the last Godzilla movie and it could act as a little recap of what happened in the events of that movie. Following afterwards, we see what looks like an egg or a cocoon with the next scene showing off our first look at Mothra in her larval form and so far I am loving the design for this form of Mothra. You can see a lot of details on her such as her carapace and her tiny arms poking out under her.
Finally, we get one of the best parts of the trailer and possibly the whole movie. We see Godzilla rising out of the water in front of MONARCH's submarine and we see our first look at Ziyi Zhang's character. Again, her character's name is not listed on IMDB's website so I am wondering if this is also going back to what Dougherty stated that a character from Kong: Skull Island returning to this movie. From what sources have said, her character is apparently the Nick Fury of the Monsterverse. I know that this is only the first trailer, but I am not buying it. I get it more from Dr. Serizawa since he is the one that sides with Godzilla and he believed in Godzilla being the answer to killing the MUTOs in the 2014 film. So I would not be surprised that he will continue believing in Godzilla as the answer to kill Ghidorah. For all we know though, Serizawa could possibly be passing the torch to Zhang's character, but more on that later. We continue with Godzilla still rising and his dorsal plates glowing and humming as he charges up his atomic breath. We also see Mark watching in awe as well with everyone else as we see Godzilla blasts his atomic breath into the air calling his allies for help. I really love the small details they did with Godzilla as he was charging up. You can little parts of his body glowing to show that it is not just his dorsal plates that glows. It really feels like he could be in a Pacific Rim movie and he just looks so awesome in this shot.
The next shot following afterwards is this BEAUTIFUL shot of Mothra in her adult/imago form spreading her wings out for the first time with that bioluminescent light glowing. At first, I thought that it was only showing off her wings and that Dougherty didn't want to show off the whole body until they get a first impression of the design first. While her whole design is hidden, it was not left out of the trailer completely. In the high-def version of the trailer, you get to see a little more detail of Mothra in this shot. I tried to crop and enhance the picture to get a better look at her completely and what you see is the best I could come up with. On the left side of the photo, you can see her leg placed over to the side. Her head looks sort of like a wasp, but her eye is circular like her previous incarnations. Also, it looks like her mouth is gaping open. Perhaps, she is letting out a cry of her presence for the first time? You can even see what looks like her antenna as well and it looks small and thin. Then, we see the card saying, "Next Summer," and the shot of the same waterfall where the baby Mothra went to make her cocoon. Also note, Mothra has always played the good guy in every movie she has been in. Since her profile states that she was worshiped as a godess, it confirms that her role as the good and gentle monster continues in this movie as well.
Here we are now back at Antarctica where we see Emma Russell pressing the button for the bioacoustics device reading, "Detecting Specimen Bioacoustics." We now see what this device looks like and how these terrorists are using this device to release the monsters. Then, it cuts to an explosion at one of MONARCH's containment facilities in Mexico located on a volcano. We see the volcano erupt and people fleeing for their lives in horror. Finally, we get a good look at Rodan as spreads his wings out after years of slumber inside the volcano. Many people think there are two Rodans in the shot, but it has come to what I believe that there is only one and the other object flying away is actually a stealth bomber or some other kind of aircraft.
The next set of scenes, the first thing we are soldiers preparing themselves for battle with the grunt in the foreground doing the sign of the cross. Now, I have a theory about this scene, but I will come back once we come to the scene that I want to connect it to. After the soldiers, we see Mark standing up and exclaiming to someone, "You're out of your goddamn mind!" with Emma responding, "I'm sorry, but it's the only way!" We see the bioacoustics device being slammed on the table, but it looks like Madison stole the device. Again, not sure why just yet, but the reason why I am lead to believe that is Madison is because that hand does not look like it would belong to someone older. Then, we see Emma staring at something. Possibly, she is looking at the destruction the monsters are causing. And we see Rodan's shadow fly over a whole town in Mexico with hurricane like winds just wiping the whole town off the map. We see Madison at Fenway Park running away from King Ghidorah as he fires his "gravity beams". We know this is Fenway Park because Boston is the place where the final showdown takes place. We see a military jeep busting through the gate. We don't know who it is or who is driving. We get another scene in Antarctica with O'Shea Jackson's squad infiltrating MONARCH's base. We see bodies lying in the snow indicating that either those were terrorist grunts that the squad had just killed or those were some of MONARCH's soldiers that were killed by the terrorists. Now, we get to Madison at her mother's office or perhaps her father's office and she sees the photo of her when she was little, her parent's, and an older brother that we have not seen yet...or have we? Remember the soldier doing the sign of the cross? I believe that guy is Madison's older brother in a flash back scene where they were preparing to fight the MUTOs in the 2014 movie. I believe what happened was that Madison's brother was killed by Godzilla on accident, Emma witnessed it and didn't tell Mark until someone else did, and the loss of their son as well as Emma siding with Godzilla lead to both Mark and Emma breaking up and Madison is caught in the middle between her parent's squabbles and her mother's ideology that these monsters are all good for the planet. Which then, we see Madison stealing the device not to save the world, but her mother as well from her radical views.
Moving on, we see Mark dodging all the debris and taking cover from King Ghidorah's attacks to get to Madison inside Fenway Park. We then see Madison screaming at the top of her lungs while a bright yellow light flashes, again King Ghidorah attacking, and watching a frame photo of her family drop on the floor. We cut to the temple of Rodan inside the volcano where he slumbered when a big explosion destroys the temple completely. Now, two things I want to point out. One of them is that on the bottom right corner, you can see the statue of the demon, Pazuzu, which is a direct reference of the horror movie, The Exorcist. I think it's there as a reminder that Rodan is known as the "fire demon" on Rodan's profile. The second thing I want to point out is that you can see Godzilla in the background before the explosion happens. It appears that he just got into a scuffle with Rodan already and Rodan bested him. The last slide has it circled just in case you can't find him. Dougherty said in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that he wanted Rodan to be more powerful than Godzilla in a way that he is like a winged A-bomb instead of being the usual side kick that he is always portrayed in the previous films. Which brings us to our next shot showing Washington D.C. completely destroyed by Rodan and King Ghidorah. You can see Rodan flying around the giant storm caused by King Ghidorah possibly either trying to get away or trying to find a way inside the storm to get a hit on the menacing three headed dragon. Also, you can see what looks like lava being dropped from Rodan's body. Since Rodan is known as a flying A-bomb I wouldn't be surprised if Rodan learned how to spit fire balls at his targets. The scene itself looks so spine chilling and saddening because it looks like an apocalyptic waste land and there are monsters that want humanity gone.
We get more hints to Emma Russell possibly being the villain where in the next scene we see Madison say, "You're a monster," followed by, "I'm sorry," when it cut to Emma Russell that looks like another scene in Antarctica. We don't really know who Madison is saying these things too. It could be her mom, it could be her dad, or it could be a mix. She could even telling Charles Dance that HE is the monster since he is the leader of these terrorists and wanted these monsters loose on the planet. Then, we see our first detailed glimpse of of King Ghidorah with all 3 heads peaking through the window behind Madison and Madison turns slowly to face the monster that was unleashed. Next scene, we see Ziyi Zhang hugging whom I assume to be is Dr. Serizawa where it could be his final moments. Theories suggest that Dr. Serizawa may actually die in the movie and I'm basing it on the fact that Ken Watanabe has not reprised the role for Godzilla Vs Kong, but Ziyi Zhang has. Again, she is described as the Nick Fury of the Monsterverse and I don't believe in that as of yet, but we may see it happen as a way of Dr. Serizawa passing the torch to his next successor. Honestly, I would have liked to see Sally Hawkins take the leader role since she has been by Serizawa's side as his assistant since the 2014 movie. On the other hand, we don't much about Ziyi Zhang's character and her relationship with Dr. Serizawa and connection with MONARCH.
For the last time, we are back in Antarctica and we see O'Shea Jackson with his squad infiltrating the base to rescue Emma and Madison. Then, we cut to see jets were about to fly past what looks like Mothra from how the tip of the wing looks blue like her bioluminescent glow from when she was at the waterfall. Suddenly, we see Rodan crushing the jet and letting it go in mid-flight. The first shot of Rodan we can see more detail of his beak and his talons and we can confirm at this point that the maquette IS Rodan's final design. The beak is too identical with the leaked photo of the design and if that isn't enough proof then I suggest looking at all of the other photos of Rodan on here and compare it to the maquette. You will see that it looks like the same exact thing. The next shot shows King Ghidorah in all his glory and you can see how one flap from his wings is causing lightning to shoot out. That is how powerful this monster is. He is powerful enough to create storms just by flying around. If you go back to the scene of Washington D.C. being completely destroyed take a look at that storm. King Ghidorah is not doing very much other than flying around and just from that he is capable of causing lightning storms and multiple tornadoes rain down at once. Now, go back to the scene where King Ghidorah spreads out his wings and you can see lightning flashing behind him. Dougherty is really going all out on making King Ghidorah the final boss and it works wonderfully here. Then, it fades to black and fades in to Emma Russell and Charles Dance's character turning to Emma saying, "Long live the king." Obviously, this is going to be this movie's one-liner like how the 2014 movie's one-liner was, "Let them fight."
To end the trailer, we see Rodan evading more jets by shooting himself straight up into the sky with a trail of fire following behind him. We see Dr. Serizawa walking up Rodan's temple trying to not get himself burned alive. Madison is out in the middle of the baseball field at Fenway Park watching jets fly pass her. Dr. Serizawa, one last time, stares at something. We don't know what it is. It could possibly be that he is staring at Godzilla being heavily injured. Next scene, Mark witnesses Mothra showing off her "God Rays" possibly saving them from another monster that was attacking the oil drilling station. Then, we see Madison in the rain smiling looking towards someone or something. Maybe she is happy to finally see her parents getting along again and her mother changing her ways for Madison's safety at the end of the movie or it could be that Godzilla and Mothra have arrived just in time for the final showdown. Which leads to the last clip showing Godzilla either roaring at Ghidorah to intimidate him or he is doing a similar victory pose like in the 2014 movie. It is possible it is a victory pose if they're showing jets flying over Godzilla like they're celebrating his victory. Either way, it looks very cool and I am pumped for May 2019.
While I was typing this out, I learned that the trailer won ALL the poles in a land slide for best looking trailer at Comic Con. Even Variety had a poll and the trailer won 57.6% of votes! If that isn't a wake up call to Hollywood to start being more creative and stop spoiling the whole movie with their movie trailers then I don't know what is. Wasn't Aquaman and Wonder Woman 84 supposed to be the top DC comic movies for this year? What about Venom? That was supposed to be Marvel's big comic book movie they were showing, right? Well, I guess Venom and Wonder Woman 84 don't count if the trailer is not posted in the internet. Anyways, thank you for joining me on dissecting the Godzilla: King Of The Monsters trailer.
