After a couple months of silence, casting news has started to come out with Deadline announcing Dan Stevens being casted in the next Monsterverse film, which sees the return of Godzilla vs Kong director Adam Wingard.
The plot is still unknown, but the movie was first announced by Courier-Mail in Australia and then by Queensland's Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk as an incentive to adding 1,250 jobs (500 Queensland cast and crew members and 750 extras) to boost Australia's economy.
Godzilla vs Kong was released last year having the 5th largest box-office numbers worldwide making $468 million and being the second film to make $100 million in the domestic box-office in the post-COVID era despite the theatrical/HBO Max hybrid release.
After the release of the article, there seems to be some confusion about whether this movie is going to be a stand-alone Kong film or a "Godzilla vs Kong 2." Back when the movie was first announced, it sounded as though this was going to be a stand-alone Kong film that took place after Godzilla vs Kong. Even with the small tidbits of info from Production Weekly was suggesting that it seemed like the direction this movie was going with "SON OF KONG" floating around as the working title. Now, this article doesn't imply any details of what this movie is about. Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros. are keeping this project very tight lipped. However, people are now wondering if "Godzilla vs Kong 2" is the title just because that is how Deadline is calling it in the article's title. In my opinion, I don't think this implies a rematch is confirmed. I just think that the author is just implying that the next movie will take place after Godzilla vs Kong. Even when you read the article, there is nothing that suggests this will be called "Godzilla vs Kong 2." It just says the next installment in the Monsterverse. Until we get more information, I am still thinking that this is a straight up Kong film.
As for Dan Stevens, this actor has been in a lot of roles for movies and shows that I never heard of. The only ones I knew him in were Beauty and the Beast when he played Beast and in The Man Who Invented Christmas as Charles Dickens. Apparently, he is also in a 2017 movie called Colossal with Anne Hathaway and Jason Sudeikis. I remember watching that movie, but I don't recall Stevens being in the movie. However, he will be in the upcoming Netflix animated movie The Sea Beast, which releases July 8th. He was the lead role in another movie with Adam Wingard called The Guest, which helped both of them kickstart their careers when the movie was raving with positive reviews from critics and fans. So it sounds like they worked pretty well together in the past and will probably try to do something really fun for the Monsterverse.
What are your thoughts on Dan Stevens joining the Monsterverse movie? Have you seen any of his films? Do you still think this is a Kong film or do you think this going to be "Godzilla vs Kong 2?"
