HA! Made you look! You didn't think that I actually have thirteen reasons, did you? I don't think I can come up with thirteen reasons. Maybe two or three, but that is about it. You always see click bait articles titled just like that on Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube and it always makes you wonder what would be so shocking that needs to be read or watched only to find out that it's really nothing. Really aggravating, isn't it? Well, there is one sort of click bait that people have been spreading around recently and it does have to do with two franchises, Godzilla and Pacific Rim.
If you remember earlier this year, I ranted about why cross overs with Godzilla, Pacific Rim, and Gamera could never work out. It was mainly along the lines of copyright issues and getting the okay from TOHO Co. Just yesterday, an article from Collider interviewing the director of Pacific Rim Uprising, Steven S. DeKnight. He was asked about any plans for a cross over between Pacific Rim and Godzilla and he had this to say:
"…there's been a lot of discussion about that possibility [of crossing over]. Look I think it would be fantastic to have the Pacific Rim universe join Legendary's Monster Universe, it seems like a natural step. And part of the big overall plan after the third movie we've talked about is that could happen, it's always a possibility. It's not by far a certainty; it's merely theoretical at this point, but as a fan myself I would love to see that happen."
Now sites like comicbook.com and scified.com are using this quote as the holy grail confirmation that a cross over is happening. From what I gained out of this is that the director is saying to not be so hopeful on this idea. While, yes, there have been some discussions, but nothing is really set in stone. In order for something like this to happen Pacific Rim Uprising and Pacific Rim 3 both have to do very well in the box office. And in order to do that they really need to market the hell out of it like Marvel and DC does with their movies. Another big factor is, once again, getting the okay from TOHO Co. They own the rights for Godzilla and there is no way a cross over can happen without their permission. TOHO is like the overbearing parent and Godzilla is their child and they won't allow Godzilla to sleep over at another kid's house until they meet his friend's parents. In the meantime, it is very unlikely that a movie with both Godzilla and Pacific Rim will happen.
So let's say that in the future Pacific Rim Uprising and Pacific Rim 3 did well in the box office and TOHO Co. gave them permission on this cross over, how can all of this work? From how I see it, you would need to do a lot of retconning of these franchises' timelines that were already established. Honestly, by doing that you are basically stuffing Godzilla into Pacific Rim without much breathing space. They would have to explain where the Monarch organization has been during the time of Pacific Rim, where Godzilla fits in the Pacific Rim universe, where the Jaegers and kaiju fit in the Monsterverse, and also change the tones each of the franchises had already set for them. If it was up to me, I would just make Godzilla as a new monster in Pacific Rim that is totally different from the Monsterverse version. This way, the Monsterverse series and the Pacific Rim universe can stay separate and you would still get that cross over that people have been wanting.
What are your thoughts? Do you think the cross over will happen and how do you think they can get Godzilla and Pacific Rim to cross over?
